The Schoenfeld International String Competition is open to all violinists born after 15 July 1988, regardless of gender or nationality. There are no exceptions to this rule. 

Due to the global impact of Covid-19, deadline of applying the competition is extended.  The application fee is waived with amendments of pre-screening requirement for the applicants who may have difficulties of preparing materials.

  •   Repertoire List for Pre-screening Round (Online Submission with Video Link)
    1. 1. N. Paganini 

      • One Caprice of 24 Caprices for Violin Solo, Op. 1


      2. J. S. Bach - one of the followings: 

      • Sonata No. 1 in G Minor, BWV 1001, I and II movements 

      • Sonata No. 2 in A Minor, BWV 1003, I and II movements 

      • Partita No. 3 in E Major, BWV 1006, I and II movements 

      • Partita No. 2 in D Minor, BWV 1004, V movement "Chaconne"


  •   Technical Requirement for Video Recording
    1. • Recent (less than 3 years) and high-quality file, containing the required programme for the preliminary audition only (no advertisement within the video).

      • Pieces must be recorded in their entirety and must be UNEDITED (no cuts). Microphones should be positioned at a distance allowing to obtain a good sound quality. The video must be filmed from the front, using a fixed and wide camera angle; interpreter must always remain visible.

      • For the piece with piano, both players must be visible.

      • Movements must be indexed (compulsory).

      • Public recordings are accepted if they meet the recording conditions stated above.

      • It is allowed to provide separate recordings for each piece, recorded in various place and time.

      • It is highly recommended to take into consideration the quality of the sound, to allow the Jury to have the best possible judgement.


  •   First Round
    1. Maximum 35 candidates, maximum 25-minutes performance for each candidate.

      1. N. Paganini (Could be same as pre-screening):

      • One Caprice of 24 Caprices for Violin Solo, Op. 1


      2. J. S. Bach - one of the followings (could be same as the candidate’s pre-screening choice):

      • Sonata No. 1 in G Minor, BWV 1001, I and II movements

      • Sonata No. 2 in A Minor, BWV 1003, I and II movements

      • Partita No. 3 in E Major, BWV 1006, I and II movements

      • Partita No. 2 in D Minor, BWV 1004, V movement "Chaconne"


      3. One virtuosic concert piece for violin solo or with piano accompaniment by the following composers:

      • M. Ravel

      • C. Saint-Saëns

      • P. d. Sarasate

      • H. Wieniawski

      • H. Waxman

      • H. Ysaÿe


  •   Second Round
    1. Maximum 14 candidates, maximum 35-minutes performance for each candidate.

      1. Any two movements of contestant’s choice from the selected sonatas of the followings:

      • L. v. Beethoven: Sonata No. 5 in F Major, Op. 24 "Spring"

      • L. v. Beethoven: Sonata No. 7 in C Minor, Op. 30/ No. 2

      • L. v. Beethoven: Sonata No. 8 in G Major, Op. 30/ No. 3

      • L. v. Beethoven: Sonata No. 9 in A Major, Op. 47 "Kreutzer"

      • J. Brahms: Sonata No. 1 in G Major, Op. 78

      • J. Brahms: Sonata No. 2 in A Major, Op. 100

      • J. Brahms: Sonata No. 3 in D Minor, Op. 108

      • R. Schumann: Sonata No. 1 in A Minor, Op. 105

      • C. Franck: Sonata in A Major, FWV 8

      • M. Ravel: Sonata No. 2 in G Major, M. 77

      • R. Strauss: Sonata in E- flat Major, Op. 18


      2. Free of choice (with or without piano accompaniment)

      A complete works must be published by formal press company, the works chosen for the Pre-screening Round submission may be performed again during the live competition.


      3. New Chinese Composition (The duration of the piece is about 5 mins, will be announced one month before the First Round) 


  •   Semi-final Round
    1. Maximum 14 candidates, performing concerto with piano accompaniment

      Complete W. A. Mozart’s Violin Concerto - one of the followings:

      • No. 4 in D Major, K. 218, with Cadenza by J. Joachim

      • No. 5 in A Major, K. 219, with Cadenza by J. Joachim

  •   Final Round
    1. Maximum 3 candidates, performing concerto with Harbin Symphony Orchestra

      Complete Concerto - one of the followings (without repeat):

      • L. v. Beethoven: Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 61 

      • J. Brahms: Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 77

      • J. Sibelius: Violin Concerto in D Minor, Op. 47

      • P. I. Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 35
