POSTPONEMENT OF THE 5TH SCHOENFELD INTERNATIONAL STRING COMPETITION

It is with deep regret that the organizing committee announces the difficult decision to postpone the 5th Schoenfeld International String Competition to 2023. Please accept our apologies that this news is being announced only now.  Until this decision was recently made, The Schoenfeld team has been exploring alternate plans and discussing new possibilities with the government, and our funders, venue, and supporters.

While the 5th Schoenfeld was originally planned for 2020, it remains untenable to present our 5th competition this summer as we are still facing restrictions on international travel due to COVID-19.  We appreciate the great disappointment that will be felt by many of our supporters, not least the young talents of the string world who were set to impress us on stage in Harbin. We're happy to note that we have again received support from the Municipal Government of Harbin to run the 5th competition from September 5-18 in 2023.

We began coordinating the postponement a few months ago and we've initially confirmed that most of the jury members and more than 80 candidates selected in the 2020 prescreening stage will be able to join us. The list of the jury members and admitted candidates will be announced shortly via our website and the social media platform. To accommodate the postponement and the challenging time we are facing, candidates who are not able to join us in 2023 will be invited to join us for our 6th edition in 2024. Any change to our prescreened candidates’ age, educational, and professional statuses will not affect their eligibility.

Since we remain committed to the candidates from our 5th edition, we are not accepting new applications in any of our three divisions (violin, cello, and chamber music). Young musicians will be welcomed to apply to our 6th edition in 2024, and our team will ensure that the young musicians who are joining us from around the world will be maintaining the very high standards of artistic excellence that The Schoenfeld has established over its history. The application details of the 6th edition (2024) will be released at the end of 2023.

With the support of the World Federation of International Music Competitions (WFIMC), the Schoenfeld will launch several collaborative initiatives with our artistic partners, including the Strad from the UK, Amadeus.tv from China, Fritz Kreisler International Violin Competition from Austria, and many others.  More details of these partnerships will be announced soon in the upcoming month.

Thank you for your patience and as ever we do hope you will continue to support the Schoenfeld International String Competition in cultivating the next generation of the world’s excellent musicians. We look forward to welcoming you to Harbin in 2023!
